It’s probably safe to say you’re sitting in some degree of some pretty justifiable anxiety right now.
Maybe you’re labeling it concern, nervousness, worry or even scared sh**less.
You’re 'socially distancing,' washing your hands compulsively, watching non-stop news or obsessively not watching it. You might even be partaking in various ways to numb yourself just to appease this awful, awkward, angst.
Whatever you choose to call it, anxiety is uncomfortable. Living in this unexpected, unprecedented, unfolding, unknown shake up is unnerving. For sure.
However, anxiety, simply a nice-sounding euphemism for fear, serves important functions. It’s actually part of your superpower. Honestly, without it, you may not be here today. It’s your primitive fight/flight/freeze survival response and it comes in handy during danger, real or perceived.
However, most of the anxiety in modern times is no longer from life-threatening situations. But, your primitive, fear-based consciousness doesn’t know the difference. It kicks into overdrive at the drop of anything that even smells like danger.
Your brain is a stimulus-response machine with fear it's default mechanism.
Right now it’s busily perceiving a whole lot of existential danger and running, rather sprinting, with it.
Accept anxiety
Even though anxiety is your Operating System, it's possible to change your thinking about it.
Not by suppressing it (“Just don’t stress, you’ll be fine!”), using spiritual platitudes to deny it (“It’s all good!"), or dulling it (“I’ll just have another martini!”).
Rather, allow yourself to notice, observe and feel it. Understand the message it's giving you. Learn from it. Channel it. Thank it. Maybe even love it.
A powerful thing to do is talk about it with someone who listens compassionately, not trying to fix it, save you or tell you to not feel that way.
Bottom line: It's okay to feel anxious.
Simultaneously, don’t give it extra ooph by believing it has power over you.
The more you deflate anxiety by recognizing it for what it is, the less power it has.
Suffice to say, when you perceive anxiety as just fear, a primitive mechanism that's simply running amok, you’ll be less prone to generate physical problems. Remember, anxiety plays a significant role in physical health and certainly doesn’t help your immune system.
It's a choice
Here’s a spiritual Truth (no platitudes here) to post on your bathroom mirror or tattoo somewhere visible:
It’s up to you to choose to accept whatever each moment presents to you, knowing on some level you are experiencing it to learn, grow and get in touch with denied aspects of yourself.
Choosing to not resist situations will transform your life. Resisting creates more anxiety and uses a lot of energy that could be channeled in more positive, life-awakening directions.
In other words, you can choose to see what life presents as a gift of awakening, taking you to more empowered love.
If you let it.
Anxiety is a superpower
Just so you know, there are lots of ways that anxiety is positive:
1. Ingenuity
There’s a definite correlation between creativity and anxiety. History is filled with anxious artists, scientists and geniuses. If you’re experiencing anxiety, channel that energy to make a difference.
2. Connecting
Anxious people are often able to read others and are intuitively attuned. This can allow a feeling of connectedness in relationships and encourages giving and seeking support.
3. Memory
Anxiety can increase alertness, cognition and memory.
4. Physical improvement
Pre-performance anxiety (increased blood flow to muscles, higher blood pressure, quicker heart rate, increased supply of sugars and fats) is the body gearing up to take your performance to the next level. Excitement is often incorrectly defined as fear.
5. Sensing
A sudden irrational wave of anxiety could be your Higher Consciousness trying to communicate with you. You could be picking up external energy, especially suppressed fear from others, even planetarily. Hear what it’s trying to say.
Here's your lesson du jour: Instead of allowing anxiety to overtake or control you, gratefully surrender and turn it into possibility.
Maybe that’s why we've all been sent to our rooms, to big-time shift how we treat ourselves and the planet.
